Black Girl Magic: Serena Williams Unretouched or Untouchable?

I was gleefully sitting on my couch, sipping tea with my legs crossed until I stumbled across a headline.  The headline stated, “Serena poses nearly nude in unretouched photos.”  I immediately clutched my pearls!  We know Serena for many things and posing nude (or nearly nude) is not one of them.  I would have expected the article to mention such accolades as Williams revolutionized women’s tennis with her unique powerful style of play.  The article would have been more interesting if it mentioned that Serena has won 23 Grand Slam singles, which is more than any man or woman during the open era.  My heart would have been overjoyed if the author admitted that according to stats, Serena Williams is the greatest tennis player in the world.  However, this was not the case.

Not only is Serena Williams a force to be reckoned with on the tennis court, she is also making boss lady moves in the fashion and beauty industry.   She is the founder and chief executive of her own direct-to-consumer brand called S by Serena.  Williams studied fashion at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and excelled in pattern making.  Her exceptional physique, deadly serves and on-court outfits are no shock to anyone who can see clearly.  Serena released this statement concerning her love for fashion: “I’ve always loved fashion.  I remember when I was a kid, my mom used to make all our outfits. Back then, they had Vogue patterns. I would always see her pinning them and making all our clothes. And she taught us how to sew early on. So, I used to sew clothes for my dolls out of old socks and I would cut them up and make little outfits out of them.”

Even though her tennis career, being a wife and mother took priority, she has never strayed away from her passion of fashion and beauty.  Over the years, she has graced us with her beauty on countless magazine covers, continuous coverage during tennis matches and the launch of her own company.  It is a little-known fact that oftentimes Williams could be found in her dressing room at matches on a sewing machine fixing her skirts! She has been very careful of her personal brand, oftentimes using fashion statements to express and develop her public image.  No stranger to the camera, Williams has experienced the entire range of fashion from customizing her own outfits to working with Nike and recently, collaborating with Virgil Abloh to create the “Queen” collection.

So, what was the big deal surrounding the pictures published by Harper’s BAZAAR?  July 9, 2019, Alexi Lubomirski had the grand vision to publish unretouched photos of Serena Williams.  Unretouched photos mean there are no body corrections.  A techy millennial can’t manipulate your hair blowing in the windbehind the computer.  The makeup and details are not subject to maximum, technical creativity through photo editing software.  Unretouched means you get what you got- the naked truth! In the article published by BAZAAR, Serena discussed last year’s controversial match at the US Open and why she will never regret using her voice to speak out about injustice.  Well, LA Vibe is here for the tea honey! Serena is serving the people with her natural, internal and external beauty.  In our opinion, everything about this sister should shift from gorgeous unretouched photos to untouchable black girl magic!
