Whenever you mention Salt-N-Pepa, three things come to mind: Push It, asymmetrical haircuts and big gold earrings. However, the group is trending for other news this week. Last year Salt-N-Pepa announced a tour with New Kids On The Block. All S-N-P fans were excited including the staff here at LA Vibe. We immediately began searching Amazon for leather jackets, knee pads, gold chains, beanies, red lipstick and big, gold, triangle earrings. Just as an old-school, Hip Hop, frenzy was beginning, in January 2019, DJ Spinderella announced that much to her dismay, she would not be on tour with the group. What is Push It without DJ Spinderella? We were left bewildered, sad and confused- until now.
Spinderella has filed a suit against her two groupmates Salt-N-Pepa stating she was swindled out of compensation all the way back to 1999. Deidra Roper claims former bandmates Sandra “Pepa” Denton and Cheryl “Salt” James cheated her out of payments and then fired her ahead of the Mixtape Tour with NKOTB. As many artists do these days, DJ Spinderella made her opinion public in an Instagram post back in May of this year. She shared the news with her fans: “I’m deeply saddened to share with all the #SaltnPepa and #Spinderella fans that I will not be performing on the #NKOTB Mixtape Tour,” she wrote. “Despite my participation in promoting the tour and being highly publicized as one of the acts, in January 2019 I received a ‘termination’ email from #SaltnPepa excluding me from performances with the group.” Even though joined the group back in 1987 when she was 16 and played an integral role, she claims that she was left out of contract negotiations in a VH-1 show about the groups rise to fame. While Salt and Pepa were spotlighted on the show and received a larger compensation, Spinderella released a statement claiming she received “minimal compensation” for a guest role. The DJ also claims an entire album was released without her knowledge or consent. Specifically, Roper claims she was unaware of the group’s 1999 Best of Salt N Pepa album release amid their ’90s hiatus. The compilation was released in Europe with Roper’s image featured on the album cover allegedly without her consent. Instead, she says she received a call from Pepa in 2001 about money from the album but she never received it.
Representatives from the SNP camp told PEOPLE in a statement: “We will refrain from commenting on Spin’s claims until we’ve had the opportunity to review the complaint. That being said, it’s unfortunate she is choosing to take this path because Salt-N-Pepa have been very good to her, both artistically and financially, for more than 30 years.” Probably against better wisdom, instead of letting their lawyers making statements concerning Spin’s claim of trademark infringement, fraud and breach of contract, Sandra and Cheryl “inside sources” had clap backs of their own claiming Spinderella is a little in her feelings about being left out of the group. Sources close to Salt-N-Pepa stated that Spinderella was paid as an “independent contractor” and was never entitled to any royalties obtained by the duo- not trio. We hope all things work out well for all three ladies but when there is smoke, there is usually fire!
